Asaba/Abuja – Former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after resigning from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The development, which comes days after he lost the APC senatorial primary for Delta Central, marks a major political realignment in Delta State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Details of the Defection:
Senator Omo-Agege, who served as Deputy Senate President from 2019 to 2023, submitted his resignation from the APC on May 22, 2026, following his defeat in the Delta Central Senatorial primary.
He publicly announced his exit on May 28, 2026. Sources close to the former lawmaker confirmed that he has already joined the NDC and is expected to make a formal declaration soon.
He is eyeing a return to the Senate in 2027 under the new platform to represent Delta Central. In a statement, Omo-Agege praised the NDC for its open and consultative approach to politics. He expressed confidence that the party offers a credible platform to address key issues affecting his constituents, including infrastructure deficits, youth unemployment, and poor management of state resources.
Political Profile:
Rt. Hon. Senator Ovie Omo-Agege remains one of the most influential politicians from Delta State. He represented Delta Central Senatorial District and rose to become the third-highest ranking officer in the Nigerian Senate.
His defection is being described by political observers as an “earthquake” in Delta politics, given his strong support base in Urhoboland and beyond.
Reactions:
The APC in Delta State reportedly described his exit as a “welcome development,” stating that it would not weaken the party.
Meanwhile, the NDC has welcomed the move, seeing it as a boost to its growing presence in the South-South region.
This latest high-profile defection adds to the wave of political movements towards the NDC, following earlier entries by prominent figures such as Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and several other senators and lawmakers.
