Port Harcourt – Ambassador Blessing Fubara Snr, elder brother of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, has formally joined the contest for the 2027 Rivers State governorship election on the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Blessing Fubara Snr. recently obtained the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms of the NDC at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

He has since been screened by the party and is now among the aspirants vying for the NDC governorship ticket.
Declaration and Vision:
In his declaration, Blessing Fubara Snr. vowed to serve only one four-year term if elected. He described Rivers State as currently “distressed” and in need of urgent restoration of peace, economic prosperity, dignity, and opportunities for its people.
He pledged to respect the senatorial zoning arrangement in the state and focus on people-oriented governance, youth empowerment, urban renewal, and grassroots development.
The aspirant also claimed to have built a strong support base of over two million people across the 23 local government areas of the state.
Background:
The move comes barely days after Governor Siminalayi Fubara withdrew from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries. Blessing Fubara Snr., who recently defected from the APC to the NDC, has however rejected claims that he is a “placeholder” for his brother, the governor.
He emphasized that he and Governor Fubara do not share the same political ideology and that his decision to contest is based on his long-standing ambition and personal conviction to serve Rivers State.
The NDC Rivers State Chairman, Hon. Success Jack, confirmed that Blessing Fubara Snr is one of the party’s governorship aspirants and expressed confidence in the party’s readiness to contest all positions in the 2027 elections.
Political Context:
The development adds a new dimension to the already complex political landscape in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 polls. It comes amid ongoing tensions between Governor Fubara and his political godfather, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
As political realignments continue across parties, all eyes are now on the NDC primaries and how the party positions itself as a major contender in what promises to be a highly competitive governorship race.
