The Federal Government has announced that repair works on the damaged expansion joints of the Kara Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will commence on September 8, 2026, and last for two weeks.
Acting Federal Controller of Works in Ogun State, Engr. Richard Adeleye, disclosed the schedule on Saturday, September 5, while speaking with journalists during an inspection of the affected section of the expressway.
He said the rehabilitation had become necessary because the expansion joints had exceeded their service life and now posed risks to motorists on the busy corridor.
According to Adeleye, the work will be carried out in phases to minimise disruption. “There will be traffic control here from the 8th of this month, which will last for two weeks, precisely because of the curing that is expected before it is opened to traffic,” he stated. “We will first work on half of the expansion joint to allow traffic to go slowly on the other half of the carriageway. After one week, we will switch to the other end.”
Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and other agencies will be deployed to manage traffic throughout the period. The affected construction zone is expected to cover a limited stretch, allowing controlled passage for vehicles.
The Kara Bridge, a critical point on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, has undergone previous maintenance interventions, including earlier expansion joint works that faced suspensions or rescheduling due to various factors. Motorists have been advised to plan journeys carefully, exercise patience, and obey traffic directives during the upcoming repairs to ensure safety and smoother flow.
The Federal Ministry of Works emphasised that the intervention aims to enhance the structural integrity of the bridge and reduce accident risks on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways.
