Residents of Oganigu community in the Dekina area of Kogi State have been forced to abandon their homes following a series of brutal attacks by suspected armed bandits, leaving the once-inhabited village eerily empty, with only deserted thatched huts and wooden structures and a few animals remaining.
The violence reached a horrifying peak on May 6, when bandits descended on the community, k!lling at least one person identified as 17-year-old Nasiru Ulayi injuring two others, and setting homes ablaze.
The attack left families with no choice but to seek refuge in displacement camps.
A video capturing the ghost-like state of the abandoned village was shared online by former Senator Dino Melaye, drawing wider attention to the persistent banditry and herder-farmer conflicts that have long plagued the Kogi East region.
Distressed community members have since appealed to President Tinubu and Kogi State Governor Ododo for urgent intervention and protection. As of the time of reporting, no arrests had been made in connection with the attacks.
