Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has weighed in on a long-standing debate about finances in relationships, stating that there is nothing wrong with couples keeping separate bank accounts — including those who are legally married.
Speaking on The Uncut Podcast, the singer was asked whether women should maintain secret or personal bank accounts away from their partners. Davido responded affirmatively and extended the advice to both men and women.

In a lighter moment during the conversation, the singer noted that discovering a secret account belonging to his wife, Chioma Rowland, would not upset him. Some reports indicate he even joked about possibly contributing to such an account.
“Yeah, I think it’s good. I actually think they should; you never know,” he said. “If I ever found out that my wife had a secret bank account, I’d not be angry; I think everybody should have their own.”
The multi-award-winning artist emphasised that personal financial independence provides security in an unpredictable world. He argued that both partners in a relationship should be able to “mount their ground” financially, ensuring they can stand on their own if circumstances change.
Davido broadened the point beyond women, insisting the principle applies equally to everyone regardless of marital status. “I think everybody should have their own,” he added.
The comments have sparked discussion online among fans and relationship observers. Supporters of Davido’s view see separate accounts as a practical form of financial protection and autonomy within marriage.
Others maintain that fully shared finances foster greater transparency and unity between spouses.
Davido, who is married to Chioma and is a father of several children, has previously spoken candidly about his personal life and the importance of stability in his relationships. His latest remarks add to ongoing public conversations about money management among Nigerian couples.
