Children's Day
Benin City, Edo State – A joyous Children’s Day celebration organized by the Edo State Ministry of Education turned into a scene of panic and confusion on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
According to multiple reports, the incident occurred when some excited students became unruly at one of the entrance gates. This led to a stampede-like situation.
Security personnel, including a bouncer, reportedly deployed pepper spray (or tear gas) to control the crowd, triggering widespread panic.
What Sparked the Chaos ?
- Some male students from Ihogbe College allegedly made inappropriate advances toward female students.
- Bouncers intervened to rebuke them, and in the process, pepper spray was used.
- The substance affected many children, causing breathing difficulties, fainting, and a rush that resulted in students being trampled or collapsing.
Several students were rushed to the Edo Specialist Hospital for treatment. Most were treated and discharged the same day, while two were kept overnight for observation.
No d3aths have been officially confirmed in government statements, though social media reports varied.
Government Response:
The Edo State Government, through the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, clarified that the event saw a much larger turnout than anticipated.
All gates were opened to manage the crowd, but excitement led to the disorder. The government has commenced an investigation into the incident.
The bouncer involved is currently being interrogated by the police.
The Deputy Governor visited the hospital to support the affected children and their families.
Officials described the event as an isolated case and emphasized that crowd management and security lapses are being reviewed to prevent future occurrences.
Children’s Day is celebrated annually on May 27 in Nigeria to honor children and promote their rights and welfare. This year’s state event featured parades, cultural performances, and other activities before the unfortunate disruption.
