Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga has accused former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of failing to acknowledge the achievements of his predecessors or successors, describing it as part of a “dangerous trend” of applying different standards to Obi and other political figures.
Onanuga made the remarks in a commentary titled “Deconstructing Peter Obi (1),” as debates intensify over Obi’s record in Anambra and his 2027 presidential ambition under the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
“There is this dangerous trend in our public discourse whereby there are two sets of standards: one for everyone else and another for H.E. Peter Obi,” Onanuga stated.
According to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Obi “is not on record to have ever complimented any of his predecessors or successors.”
Onanuga alleged that during his eight years as governor, Obi spent the period “demarketing” former governors Chinwoke Mbadinuju and Chris Ngige. He further claimed that Obi has continued to criticise his successors since leaving office in 2014.
The presidential spokesman also targeted Obi’s media supporters, including Valentine Obienyem, accusing them of spending years promoting a favourable narrative about the former governor.
“He is the only next big thing after God. And indeed, to his credit, the media packaging has worked,” Onanuga said.
The commentary comes amid ongoing disputes over claims concerning Anambra’s debts, savings and projects under Obi’s administration. Onanuga’s remarks form part of a broader series in which he has repeatedly criticised Obi’s governance record, political consistency and public statements ahead of the 2027 elections.
