Abuja, September 20, 2026 — Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has disowned a letter circulating on social media that was purportedly written by him to the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe.
Obi, in a statement posted on his X account on Saturday, September 19, 2026, described the document as “entirely false, malicious, and a fabrication by mischievous elements aimed at misleading the public.” He further stated that the signature on the letter was “completely forged.”
“My attention has been drawn to a fake letter circulating on social media, purportedly written by me to His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe, the Obi of Onitsha, concerning political and financial matters in Anambra State,” Obi said. “I urge the public and media to disregard this spurious publication. My focus remains steadfastly on issues of national development, accountability, and building a better future for our people – never on cheap fabrications.”
The purported letter, dated September 19, 2026, and titled “The Future of Ndigbo is Bleak,” addressed the traditional ruler on issues surrounding Anambra State’s finances and politics.
It referenced the ongoing public disagreement between Obi and the administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo over alleged outstanding loans and liabilities linked to previous administrations, including Obi’s tenure which ended in March 2014.
In the circulating text, the writer allegedly called for transparency, urged that “the records be opened” and “the books be examined,” and appealed for traditional institutions, political leaders, and elders to prevent political disagreements from causing lasting division among the Igbo people (Ndigbo). It expressed concern that unresolved controversies could harm the future political relevance and unity of the South-East.
The document emerged against the backdrop of recent claims by the Anambra State government regarding external loans and financial obligations associated with earlier administrations. Obi has previously challenged aspects of those claims, insisting on accountability and evidence-based scrutiny of the records.
Obi’s media aide, Dr. Valentine Obienyem, also confirmed to media outlets that the letter credited to his principal is fake.
The rapid circulation of the purported letter and Obi’s swift denial highlight the intensity of political tensions in Anambra State and the broader South-East ahead of the 2027 general elections. No official response from the palace of the Obi of Onitsha regarding the document was immediately available.
Obi reiterated that his attention remains on national issues of development and accountability rather than engaging with fabricated publications.
