Birnin Kebbi / Across the North — Youths in the Jega area of Kebbi State over the weekend destroyed All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign materials, including posters and billboards of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Nasir Idris, in a protest against the ruling party.
The incident took place on Saturday as groups of youths returning from a local football match began chanting “bamaso” (Hausa for “we don’t want”) while moving along major roads in the town.
They targeted APC posters and billboards at strategic locations, stoning and tearing them down. The protesters also smashed the windscreens of several vehicles belonging to a local car dealer.
Security operatives later dispersed the crowd and restored order.
The APC State Publicity Secretary, Isah Assalafi, condemned the destruction and demanded a full investigation and prosecution of those responsible. He urged security agencies to act decisively, stressing that no one should be shielded by political affiliation or influence, and called on other parties to ensure their supporters engage in peaceful politics.
Meanwhile, videos circulating on social media, including posts from the account @ChiefOzo5, claim similar acts of vandalism involving APC campaign materials in other northern states.
One video, captioned as showing Borno State youths at Vice-President Kashim Shettima’s hometown, depicts a crowd burning traditional brooms (the APC’s campaign symbol), chanting “Tinubu Must Go!”, and waving flags and wearing shirts with anti-Tinubu slogans. Another video shows groups of people setting brooms alight and raising the burning symbols while gathered outdoors.
These social media clips have not been independently verified by mainstream news outlets as of press time, and no official confirmation of widespread broom-burning or coordinated destruction in Borno, Yobe or other states has been reported by security agencies or state governments.
The developments come amid intensifying political activities and early campaign mobilisations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the APC launching or stepping up grassroots efforts in several northern states in recent weeks.
Security agencies have yet to issue a comprehensive statement on the circulating videos or any related arrests beyond the Kebbi incident.
