Speaking in a heartfelt tribute at his funeral service, former Nigerian Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun has revealed that she and her late husband, Adeniyi (Niyi) Adeosun, had planned to travel every three months and “spend all the money” after years of careful living.
Adeosun made the remarks on Thursday, August 13, 2026, during the funeral service for her husband at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), City of David, Trinity Towers, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Adeniyi Adeosun, a businessman and devoted Christian, d!ed on August 5, 2026, in Lagos at the age of 62. He simply went to bed and did not wake up, with no prior signs of illness.
Reflecting on their nearly 33 years of marriage, Adeosun described a recent private conversation in which the couple decided it was time to enjoy life more fully. “This year would have been 33 years of our wedding anniversary. We had a meeting, two of us, and we said now every three months, we’re just going to be travelling, we spend all the money,” she said. “We’ve been so sensible that it’s time for us to enjoy ourselves.”
She expressed profound grief mixed with gratitude. “I’m heartbroken, I’ve found it difficult to believe that this actually happened. But at the same time, I’m very thankful.” Adeosun thanked God for her husband’s life, the years they shared as a family, their children, relatives, and friends.
She also spoke about the peaceful manner of his passing. After visiting the mortuary, she noted: “On Friday, I went to the mortuary and when I saw him, he had the biggest smile on his face. He wasn’t sick. He simply went to sleep and didn’t wake up… that’s the way I’d like to go.”
Adeosun remembered her husband as a “mischievous human being” whose playful personality filled their home with laughter. She shared one memorable anecdote from a trip to the United States, where he “declared himself disabled and got a wheelchair” to skip a long immigration queue. “The kind of things that were coming to his head. That’s Niyi for you,” she said, adding that he would be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
Adeniyi Adeosun, also known as Anthony or Niyi, was described by the family as a distinguished businessman of integrity, generosity, and steadfast faith who lived a life of hard work, service to God, and commitment to family and community.
He is survived by his wife Kemi, their children, and siblings including Adewale (Wale) Adeosun, founder of Kuramo Capital.
Funeral arrangements included a night of tributes on August 12 at Harbour Point Event Centre, Victoria Island (white attire), followed by the service on August 13 (blue attire).
Dignitaries in attendance included former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his wife, former Lagos Governor Babatunde Fashola, former Ekiti Governor Kayode Fayemi, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Florence Ajimobi, former African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina, and others.
The family’s earlier announcement of his d3ath expressed profound sorrow while submitting to the will of God and noted the comfort found in Christian faith regarding eternal rest.
