Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have rescued a 20-year-old woman who was abducted by Boko Haram insurgents during the 2021 farming season after she escaped from a terrorist camp in Gwoza LGA of Borno state.
Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, said the victim, identified as Ummi Umar, was rescued by troops on a routine patrol at about 3:35pm on Wednesday, July 29.
Citing security sources, Makama said troops found Umar wandering around the Amuda Bridge area and took her into protective custody.
According to the publication, Umar told the troops that Boko Haram fighters abducted her in 2021 and took her to the Suyaka terrorist camp in Gava 1, where she remained in captivity for five years.
Makama said she escaped after the insurgents abandoned the camp, giving her an opportunity to flee.
The publication added that the troops administered first aid to Umar before handing her over to the Ngoshe community leadership through Bulama Mallam Kunda, the community head, for further care and reunification with her family.
Makama said the latest rescue brings to 117 the number of abductees rescued through the Gwoza east corridor since the terrorist attack of March 3, 2026.
Makama said the development highlights the gains recorded through sustained military operations and patrols in the area.
The publication added that although the security situation across the north-east theatre remains relatively calm, it is still unpredictable.
Makama said troops remain on high alert and continue offensive operations to dismantle remaining Boko Haram and ISWAP enclaves.
