Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, on Sunday attended the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match between Ikorodu City FC and Enugu Rangers International FC at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena (formerly Onikan Stadium) in Lagos.
Obi was spotted in the stands watching the Matchday 6 fixture of the 2026/27 NPFL season alongside Ikorodu City FC President Sanmi Doherty.
Videos shared online captured the former governor observing the game and interacting with people around him. Fans also approached him for photographs during the half-time break.
Ikorodu City announced Obi’s presence on its social media platforms with the caption: “Live at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena to witness the beauty of the ‘NPFL—Nigeria Premier Football League.’ Ikorodu City plays host to Rangers in #NPFL27 | Match Day 6. Welcome to Lagos, @PeterObi.”
The hosts secured a comfortable 2-0 victory over the defending champions. Aderemi Adeoye opened the scoring in the eighth minute, while Ikechukwu Junior added the second goal in the 63rd minute to seal the win for the Lagos-based side.
Photographs shared by Obi’s photographer, Esther Umoh, also showed the politician posing with members of the Enugu Rangers squad after the match.
Rangers arrived in Lagos unbeaten in their previous four league games, having defeated Ranchers Bees 1-0 in their last outing. Ikorodu City, meanwhile, were looking to bounce back from a 2-1 defeat to Bendel Insurance earlier in the week and remained unbeaten at home this season prior to the fixture.
Obi’s appearance at the local league match continues his pattern of supporting Nigerian sports. He has previously attended high-profile fixtures, including Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Uyo in March 2025.
The visit comes as the NDC prepares for the 2027 general elections, with Obi and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, recently given authority to nominate key officials of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council.
The result provided an early-season boost for Ikorodu City while ending Rangers’ unbeaten run.
