Nollywood actress and filmmaker Iyabo Ojo has reflected on her short-lived first marriage, saying it should have ended on her wedding night.
Speaking in an interview on the Morayo Show, Ojo addressed her decision to leave the marriage and whether she harboured any regrets. Looking back, she said the relationship should have ended far earlier than it did.
“The marriage should have ended even long, long before it did, it should have ended on my wedding night. Yes. So, I took my time, and if I look back, I’m so glad I didn’t stay, because if I had stayed, probably my kids wouldn’t be where they are today. It wasn’t about me, when I left, it was about my children. It was about me having a sound mind,” she said.
Ojo married Ademidun Ojo in 1999 at the age of 21. The couple had two children, Festus (also referred to as Felix in some reports) and Priscilla, before the marriage ended around 2001. She has previously shared that on their wedding night her then-husband told her he did not love her and had married her only because she was pregnant.
She explained that she took time before finally leaving and is grateful she did, believing that remaining in the marriage could have negatively affected her children’s future and her own peace of mind. The decision, she stressed, was driven by the desire to provide a better environment for her children rather than personal freedom.
Ojo has hinted that more details of her story will appear in an upcoming book and a cinema film in which she plans to explore her history.
The former couple publicly reunited in a limited capacity in 2025 at their daughter Priscilla’s wedding to Tanzanian singer Juma Jux, where Ademidun Ojo walked his daughter down the aisle.
