The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a nationwide public holiday to mark this year’s Eid ul Mawlid, the Islamic celebration commemorating the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).
The announcement was made on Friday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government. It was contained in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

Tunji-Ojo extended warm felicitations to Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora. He urged all Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the values embodied in the life and teachings of the Prophet, particularly compassion, humility and service to others.
“Every Eid ul Mawlid gives us reason to pause and draw lessons from a life defined by compassion, humility and service to others,” the minister said. “These are qualities our nation needs now more than ever, and I encourage every Nigerian, not just our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
He further called on citizens to use the period for collective prayers for the peace, stability and cohesion of the country, stressing that national unity remains a shared responsibility. Tunji-Ojo charged Nigerians to observe the celebration with restraint, mutual respect and a commitment to peaceful coexistence.
The minister also reaffirmed the commitment of the President Bola Tinubu administration to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring the sustenance of peace across the country.
The declaration means all workers and members of the public will observe Tuesday, August 25, as a work-free day in honour of Eid ul Mawlid.
