The Ordeal and Rescue
In early 2026, 10-year-old Chiziterem Ozuluigbo was sent by his father to live with guardians (Mr. Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40, and Mrs. Chisom Chukwuyere, 30) in Awada, Obosi, Idemili North LGA of Anambra State.
The couple promised to care for him and enroll him in school. Instead, he suffered severe abuse—including burns (allegedly from a heated gas burner or melted plastic), beatings, starvation, and other injuries that left his body badly scarred and infected.

A viral video of his condition sparked nationwide outrage. Neighbors and community residents played a crucial role through their vigilance, reporting the situation and cooperating with authorities. This led to his rescue, the arrest of the guardians, and his placement under state protection. The Anambra State Police Command publicly commended the community’s timely intervention.

Government Intervention and Recovery
The Anambra State Government acted swiftly. Chiziterem received specialized medical treatment for his physical injuries. Dr. Nonye Soludo, the Anambra First Lady, visited him multiple times in the hospital. She pledged full responsibility for his rehabilitation (including psychological support), provided relief materials, monitored his progress, and publicly urged residents to speak out against child abuse.
Thanks to dedicated medical care, community prayers, and support, he made a remarkable and full recovery. He was discharged from the hospital around Saturday, July 18, 2026.

Reunion, Return Home, and Thanksgiving
Chiziterem was reunited with his mother and returned to his hometown, Umuofiagu-Ukehe, Igbo-Etiti LGA, Enugu State. A joyful thanksgiving celebration followed at Maria Assumpta’s Parish, Ibule, Umuofiagu, Ukehe.
During the service, the young survivor expressed deep gratitude:
To his community, local government, and people across the country who supported him, prayed for him, and stood by him.
To Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo and his wife, Dr. Nonye Soludo, for their care and support during his treatment.
He prayed for continued blessings on all who contributed to his survival.
The emotional gathering symbolized a new beginning, filled with joy as family, loved ones, and the community celebrated his survival and recovery.

Aftermath and Justice
The guardians were arraigned and remanded in custody pending trial. The case highlighted the importance of community vigilance, strong child protection laws, and societal responsibility. Chiziterem’s resilience and the outpouring of support turned a tragic story into one of hope and redemption.
