The Abia State Police Command has announced the arrest of a 35-year-old woman, Mrs Nwoko Gift, over an alleged attempt to harm her 12-year-old housemaid using a knife.
The command said the woman was captured in a video that circulated widely on social media, showing her attempting to k!ll the victim, identified as Miss Ebony Chimamanda.

A statement issued by DSP Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Abia State Command, disclosed that preliminary findings showed the incident took place on July 5, 2026.
It explained that Mrs Nwoko Gift, a native of Ehime Mbano in Imo State who resides at IBB Housing Estate, Umuahia, allegedly attempted to k!ll Miss Chimamanda, who lived with her, on the same day.
The motive, according to the police, stemmed from the young girl’s alleged refusal to spread out clothes as instructed before the suspect left for the market.
Further investigation reportedly revealed that the suspect had a history of repeatedly beating the child and threatening her life.
According to the police, operatives attached to the World Bank Divisional Police Headquarters in Umuahia moved swiftly to the scene based on credible intelligence, rescuing the victim, arresting the suspect, and recovering the knife used in the attack.
The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation, and the suspect is expected to be charged with attempted mürder once investigations are concluded.
The police command condemned the suspect’s actions and urged members of the public to refrain from such violent conduct, stressing that anyone found engaging in similar acts should be reported to the appropriate authorities.
