Abuja — The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a reminder to Nigerians who hold dual citizenship, to always use a valid United States passport when entering or departing the United States.
In a statement posted on its official X account on Sunday, the Mission emphasised that the requirement is mandatory for all American citizens, irrespective of any other nationality they may hold.
“The United States Mission in Nigeria reminds all dual U.S.-Nigerian citizens that they must use a valid U.S. passport to enter and exit the United States,” the statement read.
It added that the rule applies equally to children who possess dual nationality.
The advisory comes amid growing travel between Nigeria and the United States, particularly during the peak summer vacation period when many dual citizens and their families visit relatives or return from studies abroad. U.S. immigration authorities have in the past turned back or delayed dual nationals attempting to enter the country with only foreign passports.
According to U.S. law, American citizens are required to use their U.S. passport for entry and exit from the United States. While dual citizens may use their Nigerian passport for travel to and from Nigeria, failure to present a valid American passport when dealing with U.S. border officials can result in significant delays, denial of entry, or other complications.
The Mission did not report any specific recent incidents but used the statement to promote compliance and prevent avoidable travel disruptions.
Dual nationality is common among many Nigerians, especially those who have lived, studied, or worked in the United States for extended periods. The reminder serves as a timely heads-up for families planning international travel.
The U.S. Mission advised all dual citizens to ensure their American passports are up to date and to consult the U.S. embassy or consulate website for the latest travel requirements and documentation guidelines.
