The campaign convoy of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi reportedly came under attack by suspected political thugs in Calabar, Cross River State, on Wednesday.
Ester Umoh, a media aide to Obi, raised the alarm in a social media post, stating: “Thugs are trying to attack our convoy.”

The incident occurred shortly after Obi, accompanied by his wife, Margaret, and his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, arrived in the Cross River State capital for a presidential town hall meeting organised by the NDC. The former Anambra State governor had earlier visited the palace of the Obong of Calabar.
A video circulating online shows the moment of the confrontation involving the convoy. Details on the exact location, the number of people involved, and whether any injuries or arrests occurred remain limited as the situation continues to develop.
The reported attack comes barely two months after a similar incident in Benue State, where suspected thugs blocked Boko Road near the Air Force Base in an apparent attempt to prevent Obi from entering the state.
Earlier on Wednesday, police and security operatives intervened to avert a possible clash between supporters of Obi and Kwankwaso and a group of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters near the venue of the NDC town hall meeting in Calabar. The two groups had converged around the same area, creating tension that security personnel worked to de-escalate.
Obi had received a warm reception upon arrival at Margaret Ekpo International Airport earlier in the day, with party leaders, stakeholders and supporters turning out in large numbers. His convoy later moved through major streets of the city amid cheers from residents.
The development has heightened concerns about political tension and the safety of opposition figures as campaign activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections. Further updates are expected as more information becomes available from security agencies and the Obi campaign.
