The Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency has advised motorists to expect traffic delays on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as the Federal Ministry of Works commences another phase of expansion joint replacement on the Kara Bridge.
The agency, in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Babatunde Akinbiyi, on Sunday, said the repair work on the outbound Lagos carriageway of the bridge would begin on Tuesday under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Works.
According to Akinbiyi, the project will be executed by CBC Global Civil & Construction Company.
He stated that temporary traffic management measures, including lane restrictions and controlled diversions where necessary, would be introduced throughout the duration of the project.
“During the construction period, temporary traffic management measures, including lane restrictions and controlled diversions where necessary, will be implemented to ensure the safety of both motorists and construction personnel,” the statement read.
Akinbiyi urged motorists to plan their journeys ahead of time, warning that delays were likely, especially during peak traffic periods.
“Motorists are advised to expect delays, particularly during peak traffic periods, and are encouraged to plan their journeys accordingly,” the agency stated.
He also advised road users to obey traffic signs, comply with instructions from traffic management and law enforcement officers, maintain safe following distances, and avoid driving against traffic.
TRACE said it would work with the FMW, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, and other stakeholders to deploy adequate personnel to manage traffic and minimise inconvenience during the repair works.
The agency also appealed to motorists for patience and cooperation, noting that the rehabilitation was necessary to improve the safety and durability of the bridge infrastructure.
The repairs come amid recurring road crashes that have resulted in death and prolonged hours of gridlock at the Kara Bridge section of the expressway.
The FMW had in March continued the replacement of the expansion joints of Kara Bridge, outbound Lagos.
The Federal Controller of Works, Olayiwola Komolafe, had stated that the maintenance work would last two weeks.
However, following persistent gridlock that lasted several days, the repair works were suspended.
On Friday, multiple crashes on the Kara Bridge section of the expressway caused gridlock, leaving motorists stranded. One person had also died while two others sustained injuries in the accidents.
