Puebla, Mexico — A supermarket manager is being hailed as a hero after security camera footage captured the dramatic moment he sprinted into a busy road and rescued a toddler from being struck by an oncoming vehicle.
The incident occurred outside the Super King El Rey del Ahorro supermarket in Puebla’s San Isidro Castillotla neighborhood.
Luis Cruz, 34, a manager at the store, was working on his day off to cover for five absent employees. He was outside moving a pallet of goods when a three-year-old girl suddenly ran out of the store entrance and toward a multi-lane thoroughfare.
Video from the store’s security cameras shows the child darting into the street. Her mother rushed after her but slipped and fell just short of grabbing the girl. Cruz, spotting the danger, immediately dropped what he was doing and chased the toddler.
In a split-second decision, Cruz dove into the road, scooped up the child and rolled to safety moments before a silver minivan would have hit her. He then returned the unharmed girl to her parents before limping slightly back to his work and resuming his tasks.
“I saw the mother reaching out her hand, but she doesn’t quite catch her,” Cruz later recounted. “So, at that moment I decided to quicken my pace because the danger is imminent, and I see a car coming.” He credited paternal instinct for his actions, noting that he is a father of four and considers children “the most valuable thing someone can have in life.”
The supermarket praised Cruz’s quick thinking and selflessness. In a social media post, the store awarded him 20,000 Mexican pesos (approximately $1,184) and named him Manager of the Year.
“Today you saved a life,” the supermarket wrote. “When there was a 100 percent probability that something terrible would happen, you made that 100 percent become 0 percent. And not just anyone does that.” The post added that Cruz demonstrated not only professional excellence but also exceptional human values.
Cruz has described the rescue as “fate,” noting that he would normally have been inside handling administrative duties. The widely shared video has drawn widespread praise for his bravery, with many calling him a true hero for acting without hesitation.
