LAGOS/NAIROBI — A male passenger d!ed aboard a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Lagos on Tuesday night, October 6, 2026, after becoming unresponsive roughly 20 minutes before landing.
The airline confirmed a medical emergency, while Nigerian aviation authorities said the man had become restless and aggressive, allegedly attempting to access the cockpit and open a cabin door before being restrained.

Kenya Airways (KQ) said in a statement that the incident occurred at approximately 21:20 hours Nigerian local time. “One of our passengers was found to be unresponsive approximately 20 minutes before landing in Lagos,” the airline stated.
Crew members administered first aid in line with their training and followed emergency procedures. The aircraft landed safely at Murtala Muhammed International Airport at 21:41 hours, where medical personnel met the plane. Further examination confirmed the passenger had d!ed.
“We convey our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and apologise for any inconvenience this incident may have caused,” Kenya Airways said.
The carrier added that it is providing support in coordination with the family, local authorities and aviation regulators, while upholding the privacy and dignity of those involved. The airline has not released the passenger’s identity, age, nationality or the specific flight number.
According to Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the passenger grew restless and aggressive during the flight.
He allegedly tried to gain access to the cockpit and later attempted to open the rear door of the aircraft. Crew and fellow passengers restrained him by tying his hands behind his back to prevent further disruption and ensure the safety of those on board. The passenger was declared d3ad upon arrival in Nigeria. Police have taken over the investigation into the circumstances of the d3ath. The family may request an autopsy, Achimugu noted.
Videos and accounts shared online by passengers who were on the flight have circulated widely, showing moments of panic as the man reportedly struggled and attempted to open a cabin or emergency exit door while the aircraft was still airborne.
Witnesses described other travellers and crew working to restrain him. Some reports claimed the man had appeared energetic earlier and had shown signs of agitation before or during boarding, though these accounts remain unverified by official sources. Kenya Airways’ formal statement did not address the alleged attempts to open the door or the restraint.
The cause of d3ath has not been publicly determined. Nigerian police are leading the probe, and authorities have not released further details pending the investigation. Kenya Airways said it is cooperating fully with relevant agencies.
The incident has drawn attention to in-flight medical and security protocols on international routes. Cabin doors on commercial aircraft are designed so they cannot be opened in flight due to pressure differentials, but attempts to do so can still cause significant disruption and alarm among passengers and crew.
No other injuries were reported, and the flight continued to its destination without further incident after the passenger was restrained. Kenya Airways has not commented further beyond its official statement. Investigations continue.
