More details have emerged regarding the tragic and sudden d3ath of Mary Habila, a young nurse attached to the David Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences (DUFUS).
For days, social media has been filled with questions, rumors, and speculations. But her close friend and colleague, Anita Baaki a who traveled with her has come up in a sworn court affidavit to clear the air and state the facts.

According to a detailed report by Vanguard Newspaper, here is exactly what transpired during Mary’s final hours on earth:
- The Journey to Ebonyi State
On June 24, 2026, Mary, Anita, and other staff members traveled from Abuja to Ebonyi State on official duties under the Ministry of Works. They were accommodated in separate, adjoining rooms in a staff chalet located within the minister’s country home in Uburu. Anita clarified that this chalet is specifically for staff and associates, not the minister’s personal residence. - The Final Conversation (June 26, 2026)
On the evening of June 26, Mary returned to the chalet after having her hair done. She happily stopped by Anita’s room to show off her new hairstyle. The two friends laughed, joked, and chatted like they always did.
Then, Mary said something that would be her last:
“Mary told me she was tired and wanted to take a shower before sleeping. That was the last time I saw her alive.” — Anita Baaki, in her sworn court affidavit.
3. The Shocking Discovery
The next morning, Anita became deeply worried when Mary didn’t come out. Her phone calls went unanswered. She knocked repeatedly, but the door was locked from the inside. Sensing something was terribly wrong, the staff eventually forced the door open.
Tragically, they found Mary lying unconscious on the floor near the door. She was rushed to the hospital, but doctors confirmed she was dead on arrival.
The Search for Truth and Justice
While the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has expressed deep sadness and is actively calling for a full forensic investigation and autopsy to scientifically determine what killed this young nurse, the public remains heartbroken.
