The President of Burkina Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traoré has questioned why nearly 1,000 Burkinabè students in Saudi Arabia are studying Sharia and Islamic law instead of vocational or technical fields that could support Burkina Faso’s development.
He noted that none of the students is enrolled in programmes that would directly benefit the country.
Traoré said authorities are reviewing the overseas scholarship programme to better align it with national priorities.
He remarked: “We have identified nearly 1,000 young Burkinabè students in Saudi Arabia. The surprising thing is that they are all learning Sharia and Islamic law. None of them is learning a trade. My question is this: they want to learn this Sharia in order to come and apply it in which country?”
