Among Nigerians, cherries are undoubtedly adored and consumed more than any other food. Regrettably, the majority of people are unfamiliar with the genuine name of this fruit. The tropical fruit commonly known as “cherry,” which is only available during the fall season, is called the “Cherry.” In Nigeria, it is referred to as “Agwaluma” by the Hausa and Yoruba people, while the Igbo people know it as “Udara.”
This widely available delicacy from Nigeria is highly favored. Due to its cultivation in the northern part of the country, it is often called “Hausa groundnut.” However, the true name for this nutrient-dense nut or fruit is “Tiger nuts.” Moreover, Tiger nuts have gained popularity globally, particularly in Asia. The English term “tiger nuts” has only recently become well-known.
This particular fruit boasts one of the finest seeds found anywhere. It is enjoyed by both young and adult individuals alike. However, very few people are aware of the true name of this renowned fruit. In Yoruba, it is known as Awin, while the Igbo call it Icheku, and the Hausa refer to it as Tsamiyar kurm. Its formal English name is “Black velvet tamarind.” It is a seasonal fruit with delightful orange pulp.
