Abuja — The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has clarified that Nigerians living abroad can travel home using expired Nigerian passports, which can then be renewed upon arrival in the country.
The Service made the announcement as many diaspora Nigerians prepare for end-of-year trips home. According to NIS, travellers do not need a currently valid passport to enter Nigeria.
Expired passports remain acceptable for the journey, allowing returnees to process renewals conveniently while in the country rather than facing delays or complications abroad.
Service Public Relations Officer, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, confirmed the position. He noted that the arrangement supports Nigerians planning December visits, enabling them to handle passport renewals during their stay instead of waiting for processing at foreign missions.
Akinlabi also addressed the ongoing passport intervention exercise in the United Kingdom. He stated that the special exercise has not disrupted regular services at the Nigerian High Commission. Applicants with scheduled appointments continue to be attended to as planned.
Furthermore, the contactless passport application platform remains fully operational. This digital option allows eligible Nigerians who prefer not to visit a passport office in person to process renewals remotely through the official app.
The clarification aligns with longstanding policy that prioritises the right of Nigerian citizens to return to their homeland. Holders of expired passports are expected to present the document as proof of nationality upon entry. Once in Nigeria, they are required to renew the passport before departing again for their countries of residence.
NIS has previously directed airlines and border officials to facilitate boarding and entry for such travellers, though some airlines have occasionally raised concerns over compliance with their own documentation rules. The Service continues to engage stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation.
Nigerians in the diaspora are encouraged to take advantage of the provision, especially ahead of the festive season, while also using available digital channels or intervention exercises to keep their travel documents up to date.
The Nigeria Immigration Service reaffirmed its commitment to efficient passport services for citizens at home and abroad.
