ABUJA, October 21, 2026 — The Government of the United Mexican States has formally granted agrément to Bemigho Reno Omokri, accepting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Mexico, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Guatemala, the Republic of Honduras, and the Republic of Nicaragua.
The Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, José Manuel Briseño Flores, delivered the official agrément on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, to the Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Babagana Wakil. Omokri announced the development in a post on his verified X account, writing: “To God Be The Glory… Today In Abuja Delivered The Agrément From The Government of the United Mexican States Accepting Me…”

The approval ends months of speculation and delays surrounding the non-career diplomat’s posting. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated Omokri as part of a larger batch of ambassadorial appointments confirmed by the Senate in December 2025. The President formally approved the postings of 65 ambassadors on March 6, 2026, assigning Omokri to Mexico City.
In the intervening period, reports circulated that Mexico had rejected or delayed the appointment. Some Nigerian diaspora groups petitioned Mexican authorities against the nomination. Omokri repeatedly denied any rejection, attributing the lag to administrative bottlenecks linked to Mexico’s co-hosting of the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside the United States. In a June 2026 interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, he stated: “Mexico has not rejected me. Not at all… Most of us ambassadors have not resumed. So, I’m not the only one.”
By August 2026, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that 65 of 69 appointed ambassadors had received host-country acceptance, with two postings (reportedly including Mexico) still pending. The ministry expressed confidence that the remaining agréments would be secured.
Omokri, a former Special Assistant on New Media to President Goodluck Jonathan, is a well-known political commentator, author, and social media influencer. His appointment forms part of Tinubu’s broader deployment of both career and non-career ambassadors to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic presence abroad. Relations between Nigeria and Mexico have focused on potential cooperation in energy, trade, and South-South collaboration.
With the agrément now in place, Omokri is expected to proceed with the remaining diplomatic formalities, including the presentation of letters of credence to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, before fully assuming duties in Mexico City and the concurrent posts in Central America.
The development clears one of the final outstanding hurdles in Nigeria’s 2025–2026 ambassadorial deployment exercise.
