LAGOS — The Lagos State Government has announced the temporary closure of the Oke-Afa Bridge in Isolo Local Government Area for three weeks to allow for critical rehabilitation works, with phased traffic diversions set to begin this Friday.
According to a statement issued on Monday, August 24, 2026, by the Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the bridge will be shut to vehicular traffic from Friday, August 28, to Friday, September 18, 2026.
The rehabilitation is being undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Works through the Office of the Federal Controller, Lagos, in conjunction with Messrs. Strabic Construction Limited.
The works will be executed in two phases to minimise disruption on the busy corridor that links Isolo, Ejigbo and surrounding communities.
Phase One (Friday, August 28 to Friday, September 11) will cover the outbound Isolo-to-Ejigbo axis of the bridge. During this period, motorists travelling from Isolo towards Ejigbo will be diverted onto the Isolo-bound carriageway at Pako Roundabout. Traffic will operate in both directions on the affected section before vehicles rejoin the main carriageway at Mobil Filling Station. Motorists coming from Ejigbo will maintain free movement and share the carriageway with Ejigbo-bound traffic between Mobil Filling Station and Pako Roundabout, after which they regain full access.
Phase Two (Saturday, September 12 to Friday, September 18) will focus on the inbound Ejigbo-to-Isolo section. Motorists heading from Ejigbo towards Isolo will be diverted onto the Ejigbo-bound carriageway from Mobil Filling Station, with traffic moving in both directions before rejoining the main carriageway at Pako Roundabout. Traffic from Isolo will continue to move while sharing the carriageway in the designated section.
“Oke-Afa Bridge will be temporarily closed to vehicular movement, and motorists are advised to use the following alternatives,” the commissioner stated in the official traffic management plan. He urged motorists to exercise patience and cooperate with traffic management officials who will be deployed in the area. An emergency tow vehicle will also be stationed along the axis to handle breakdowns promptly.
The Oke-Afa Bridge is a key link connecting Isolo, Cele, Jakande Gate, Ejigbo and several other densely populated communities in the Oshodi-Isolo axis. Residents and motorists had previously raised concerns about the structure’s deteriorating condition, including cracks, exposed reinforcement and surface wear, prompting calls for urgent intervention. The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos had earlier assured that the bridge would be repaired rather than demolished.
The Lagos State Government apologised for any inconvenience the temporary closure may cause and called on the public to plan their journeys ahead, use the designated alternative routes, and comply with traffic directives to ensure smooth movement during the rehabilitation period.
Commuters and motorists in the Isolo-Ejigbo corridor are advised to allow extra travel time and follow official updates from the Ministry of Transportation and LASTMA as the works progress.
