Google Searches For BBNaija Housemates’ Preferred to Academic and Nation-Building Topics

Well-meaning Nigerians have lamented the fact that Google searches for BBNaija Housemates are preferred to academic and nation-building topics among Nigerian youths.

This is in spite of the fact that every Nigerian youth is currently out of school and idling around at home.

Well-meaning Nigerian adults and parents have decried the development. Parents often find it difficult to instil the discipline  regarding viewership of the often lewd scenes of the reality TV show. The difficulty is more with grown teenagers and young adults.

Parental control is more so difficult with teenage and young adult wards who have smart phones. Taking television viewership away from from them is really of no effect.

The revered Yoruba monarch, the Ooni of Ife, recently lamented the moral impact of the show. In a speech on World Youth Day, he regretted that the elders of tomorrow spend valuable time watching sex films rather than topics about nation-building.

According to him:

“Nigerian youths are fond of accusing and abusing our leaders. Stop abusing them. Contribute your own quota. Let’s wear our thinking caps and begin to act like real future leaders that we are.

“In the last general election, the total number of votes cast was around 27, million, while over 170 million people voted during the Big Brother Naija reality show,” the Ooni said.

In another development Nigerian actress, Lala Akindoju who spoke in the same vein on her twitter handle said that:

“I still wish we will take our elections and holding our leaders accountable as seriously and passionately as we take big brother.

I wish young people will give the same energy to register to vote when it is time. We have to do more to fight for our country,” Akindoju said.

Meanwhile, Laycon, Erica, Nengi, Dorothy and Ozo attract the most Google searches especially for BBNaija Housemates. Very little and in some cases, no academic or political searches were found in some some states and regions of the country.
