Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu donates two billion naira for the revitalisation of the akwete weaving industry.
The fabric was practically abandoned with the onset of imported European outfits. Governor Chukwuma Soludo first announced the resuscitation during his swearing in to his first term in office. He has since continued to wear it to all official engagements.
Nigeria First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu announced a donation of two billion Naira support for the revitalisation of the agelong Weaving industry.
She announced the donation during her maiden visit to Akwete Weavers Village in Abia state and promised to wear the fabric if President Bola Tinubu is re-elected.
While highlighting the need to promote the Igbo traditional root by wearing dresses made from the handwoven fabric, the First Lady applauds the Akwete women for their passion and resilience in preserving the cultural heirloom.
At the ceremony, the group too conferred the First Lady with the traditional title of Ugo Nwanyi_ of Abia state.
