Veteran Nollywood actress and filmmaker, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, has opened up about the harrowing experience she and her family faced during the 2020 #EndSARS protests, revealing that her children received death threats, prompting her to rethink her activism.
The actress who has remained in the spotlight for over three decades, made the revelation during an interview on Rubbin’ Minds, a current affairs programme on Channels Television, aired on Sunday.
Reflecting on the intensity of the backlash she endured, the award-winning actress described the #EndSARS period as the most threatening chapter of her public advocacy journey.
She said, “I am used to d3ath threats; I have received them many times. But I have never seen anything like what happened during #EndSARS. It was intense.”
According to Omotola, the situation took a disturbing turn when her children became targets.
My kids started getting death threats. That was when it became weird,” she said, visibly emotional.
She explained that her role during the protests was not limited to social media commentary.
Jalade-Ekeinde said, “I was on the streets during #EndSARS. I was doing international advocacy. I spoke with CNN, engaged with international NGOs and embassies, and I was doing a lot of work.”
The actress further revealed that the threats escalated from digital abuse to physical intrusions.
“When people started coming physically to my home and place of work to look for me, I knew I had to worry about other people and not just myself,” she said.
