Deposed Emir of Kano Released from Detention, Relocates to Lagos

News - Women's Perspective

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja yesterday, ordered the release of dethroned Emir of Kano, Muhammed Sanusi II from detention.

The former Emir has been in Nasarawa where he was banished to and kept under house arrest by the Kano state government.

Reports say that Justice Anwuli Chikere gave the interim order for his release in an ex-parte ruling, Friday morning, March 13. The ruling was issued after listening to Sanusi’s lawyer, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN)’s submission.

It was directed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Attorney General of Kano state and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).

All 4 recipients of the order were named as respondents in the March 12th suit filed by Sanusi.

In the ruling, Justice Anwuli Chikere granted that pending the hearing and determination of his originating summons, Sanusi’s “rights to human dignity, personal liberty, freedom of association and movement in Nigeria, (apart from Kano state).”

Sanusi was banished to Nasarawa immediately after his deposition by the Kano State government. However, shortly after arriving Nasarawa, he was airlifted in an helicopter to Awe, also in Nasarawa.

The Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai has stuck to Former Emir Sanusi’s side since his ordeal. He remained a pillar of support ensuring Sanusi had no moment of regret.

El Rufai offered him top level appointments in Kaduna State including vice chair of Kaduna State Investment Promotion Agency (KADIPA) and Chancellor, Kaduna State University.

Fans of both friends have commended Nasir El-Rufai for his unequaled support:

Former Emir Sanusi left Nasarawa for Lagos immediately after his release yesterday. He was escorted to the airport by Malam Nasir ⁦@elrufai⁩ and has since landed Lagos.
