Bukkuyum, Zamfara State — At least 22 people are feared d3ad after suspected bandits ambushed a group of traders travelling under the escort of Nigerian Army troops in Zamfara State on Sunday.
The attack occurred in the early hours of October 11, 2026, along the Gurusu–Gwashi route in Bukkuyum Local Government Area. The traders were heading from Gurusu to Gwashi to attend the weekly market when the gunmen struck.

A resident of the area, Malam Aminu Gwashi, confirmed the incident. He said several people, including security personnel, were k!lled in the ambush. Many others sustained injuries and were rushed to Bukkuyum General Hospital for treatment.
The communities of Gwashi and Bukkuyum have faced repeated bandit attacks in recent times. These assaults have severely disrupted trading activities and other economic life in the area.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the military were unsuccessful. The Information Officer of Operation Fansan Yamma, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, did not respond to calls. The Information Officer of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division, Major Osoba Olaniyi, also did not answer requests for confirmation.
As of the time of this report, neither the Nigerian Army nor the Zamfara State Police Command had issued an official statement on the attack.
The incident highlights the persistent insecurity along major rural routes in Zamfara State, where bandits continue to target traders, farmers and security personnel despite ongoing military operations.
