A man identified simply as Oladipo has told an Ibadan Customary Court that his wife, Tosin, turned violent and rebellious after refusing to heed his warnings about her line of business.
In a session at the court, Oladipo recounted how his once peaceful home has become a battlefield due to what he described as his wife’s negative transformation and bad company.
“My wife Tosin has become rebellious in the home because she associates with bad friends who influence her negatively,” he told the court.
The visibly distraught man said his wife has no regard for his authority as the head of the family and regularly insults him in the presence of neighbours.
“She flouts my orders at will and humiliates me before our neighbours and her friends,” he said.
Oladipo narrated how he had tried to empower Tosin with financial support to help her run legitimate businesses, but all efforts failed.
“I set her up in business at three different times, but all my resources went down the drain,” he said, clearly frustrated.
He claimed the breaking point came when she ignored his warning not to sell alcoholic beverages, a line of business he deemed inappropriate.
“My wife is defiant. I warned her against selling alcoholic drinks, but she turned a deaf ear to me and went ahead into the business,” he added.
Oladipo said he visited her shop to enforce his authority and put an end to the business, but what happened next shocked even him.
“I got furious, went to her shop, and ordered her to close the business. My wife, to my chagrin, pounced on me, beat me to a pulp, and tore my clothes to shreds,” he told the court.
Court officials confirmed that Oladipo filed a petition for the dissolution of the marriage, citing constant abuse, disrespect, and threats to his safety.
The presiding judge adjourned the case to allow Tosin the opportunity to respond to the allegations. She is expected to appear in court at the next hearing.
