Nigeria’s longest bridge, the Third Mainland Bridge was partially closed by 12 midnight, 24th July.
It was blocked off to inland traffic at the Adeniji end with huge concrete barricades.
The move is line with the the plans and announcements by the Federal Ministry of Works under Babatunde Raji Fashola.
The Federal Controller of Works in the Ministry, Olukayode Popoola confirmed the development in the early hours of Saturday.
He added that a diversion a diversion has been created to enable the contractor handling the repair works to commence on the outward lane of the bridge. For that reason, the bridge is now partially closed on the outward lane.
According to him, the inward lane remains open for motorists to drive through to work.
In Popoola’s words, “In the morning, when you are going to resume your work, right from Oworonsoki, you use the same lane that you normally use to g to work.
“By 12 in the afternoon, we close this lane so you can now divert. We have created diversion as you can see.
The Controller of Works appealed motorists to cooperate with the contractor so he carry out the repairs on the Third Mainland Bridge with ease. He also advised motorists to obey the traffic controllers and law enforcement agents to ensure there is no chaos on the bridge.
He reconfirmed the commitment of the federal government to finish the repair works within the stipulated 6 months.
