According to Punch, tragedy struck in Efon Alaaye, Ekiti State, when a woman identified as Modupe Alasin lost her life after being brutally assaulted by her husband over an alleged delay in following him to the farm.
According to eyewitnesses, the disturbing incident occurred on Tuesday morning when the couple reportedly had a disagreement about the womanās lateness. A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, narrated that Modupeās husband descended heavily on her, flogging her repeatedly with a stick despite her cries for mercy.
āShe was shouting and begging him to stop, but he refused. Everyone around heard her screams. After some minutes, he ordered her to fetch water from the nearby stream. She staggered towards it but collapsed and died before she could reach it,ā the witness recounted.
Her sudden death sent shockwaves through the community, with residents expressing anger and sorrow over the tragic loss. Many described Modupe as a hardworking woman who was devoted to her family.
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Police Command, SP Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident, noting that the suspect had been arrested. āYes, it is true. The husband has been taken into custody, and an investigation is ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances that led to this unfortunate incident,ā Abutu stated.
The development has sparked outrage among womenās rights advocates and civil society groups in the state, who condemned the act and called for justice. They urged the government to intensify efforts in sensitising communities on the dangers of domestic violence and enforcing laws that protect women from abuse.
āThis is not just about one woman; it is about a culture that tolerates violence within homes. Domestic violence is a crime, and perpetrators must face the full weight of the law,ā said a member of a local advocacy group.
Residents of Efon Alaaye have since gathered at the deceasedās family home to sympathise with her relatives. Community leaders have also called for calm, urging residents to allow the police to conclude their investigation.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at a morgue in the area, while the suspect is expected to be charged to court once investigations are completed.
