The world is set to finally get a reprieve from uncertain health hazards posed by covid19. This follows the first highly successful vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.
The medical breakthrough is particularly significant for Nigeria and Abia State.
This is in view of the fact that one of the scientists behind the discovery is Nigerian born Dr Onyeama Ogbuagu.
Onyeama is one of the twin sons of Chibuzo Ogbuagu, Professor of Political Science and a former Vice chancellor of Abia State University.
Prof Ogbuagu was also a former Secretary to the Abia State Government (SSG). His wife, Stella is equally a professor of Sociology at the Abia State University.
Onyeama and his twin brother were born in the US when their parents were studying for their doctorate degrees at Yale.
One of the brains behind the covid19 breakthrough vaccine, Associate Prof Onyeama studied medicine at Nigeria’s University of Calabar, graduating in 2003.
He later returned to the US to specialise in Infectious Disease and Internal Medicine.
Speaking about the vaccine, Dr Ogbuagu said that efficacy is over 90% which is way beyond the industry standard of 50%.
He added that the efficacy of the vaccine and the administration indeed mean the beginning of the end of the corona virus pandemic.
The scientist noted that there is currently insufficient doses for everyone (even in the US).
Another challenge is that the vaccine needs to be stored at -90 degrees at all times.
The Associate Professor said that “this has been known way ahead of time and so preparations have been made” both by the American government and Pfizer in particular who has undertaken its own independent distribution plans.
All logistics plans have taken into consideration, the storage temperature levels, Dr Ogbuagu added.
Meanwhile, Abia State is already taking ownership of its state-born Dr Ogbuagu.
Expectedly, Nigerians are quick to remind him of the failings of his government.
