The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University branch, has resumed its previously suspended indefinite strike, citing the Taraba State Government’s failure to implement agreements reached with the union on January 17, 2025.
The decision was contained in a press statement signed by the union’s chairman, Joshua Garba Mbave, and made available to journalists on Wednesday in Jalingo.

According to the statement, the industrial action was reactivated following what the union described as the government’s inability to take “concrete and verifiable steps” toward fulfilling its obligations.
The union noted that the strike had earlier been suspended in good faith to allow the government sufficient time to address the agreed issues, but lamented that no meaningful progress had been recorded.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Taraba State University, TSU Branch, hereby informs the general public, students, parents, and all stakeholders that it has resumed its previously suspended total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike action,” the statement read.
ASUU explained that its congress, held on February 18, 2026, reviewed the situation and concluded that the continued neglect of longstanding issues left it with no alternative but to resume the industrial action.
The union maintained that it had exercised patience and engaged the authorities through dialogue before taking the decision.
Among the issues cited for the renewed strike were the absence of a functional pension scheme for the institution, failure to pay outstanding salary arrears owed to lecturers, and the non-payment of accumulated Earned Academic Allowances.
ASUU also accused the authorities of failing to implement the newly negotiated 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement, which it said was critical to improving staff welfare and stabilising the university system.
Mbave said the lingering challenges had persisted for years and continued to affect staff morale, productivity and the overall functioning of Taraba State University.
He stressed that the resumption of the strike was a last resort, undertaken only after sustained dialogue with the Taraba State Government failed to produce the desired results.
The union called on relevant stakeholders to urgently intervene to resolve the crisis and prevent further disruption to academic activities in the institution and across the state.
