Nigerian singer and entrepreneur, Oluwatosin Oluwole Ajibade, popularly known as Mr Eazi, has claimed that he coined the phrase m, āDetty Decemberā, which has become synonymous with funfair during Christmas holidays in the country.
Speaking at his Detty Rave concert in Accra, Mr Eazi claimed that he coined the phrase while working as a show promoter in Ghana.
He, however, admitted that āDetty Decemberā is bigger than him or anyone else.
“While working as a show promoter with my friends, I suggested that we call our December event āDetty December.ā Hashtag Detty December.
āSo in 2016, me and my guys invented Detty December. And Detty December is all about going back to your roots, having fun and enjoying life intentionally. Detty December is bigger than Mr. Eazi. Itās bigger than anybody. Detty December is for all of us,ā he said.
Deola Art Alade, a Nigerian entrepreneur and wife of musician Darey Art Alade, sparked controversy after securing a legal trademark for āDetty Decemberā in 2019.
The revelation caused significant backlash among Nigerians who viewed the slang as a shared cultural phrase rather than a corporate brand.
