Dr. Oluranti Afowowe, a political scholar from the Department of History and International Studies at Osun State University, Osogbo, revealed how former President Olusegun Obasanjo was almost assassinated in prison when they secretly plotted to poison him.
In a recent podcast with popular journalist Edmund Obilo, Afowowe said that they intended to feed the former military head of state by injecting poison into a cup of tea, but he was able to escape it because he had been forewarned not to drink it.

He disclosed that in Nigeria’s political and military history, assassination attempts frequently involved more than just the use of armed security; opponents were often k!lled by covert means such as injecting them with poisoned tea.
The revelations are said to be elaborated in his book: ‘Destiny Anchored on Fate – The Story of General Oladipo Diya.
He emphasized that even though they were aware of it, MKO Abiola and General Sani Abacha were both victims of this tactic.

He also revealed that human rights attorney Gani Fawehinmi was also targeted for injection but escaped the scheme, and that General Shehu Yar’Adua passed away following an injection while in detention.
In his words, “Look, there were efforts to kill Obasanjo too in prison. He escaped. We knew how Yar’Adua died, how he was injected. Obasanjo was going to be injected, and he had been advised not to take it.”
