The town of Mokwa in Niger State is still grieving the devastation that came with one of the deadliest flood disasters in recent memory, leaving a trail of destruction and heartbreak in its wake.
Among the survivors is 65-year-old Ramat Sulaiman, who shared her emotional account of the tragedy that struck her community early Thursday morning.

Ms. Sulaiman’s house was completely destroyed by the floodwaters, leaving her and her family homeless. Despite her personal losses, she considers herself lucky to have survived.
Just two blocks away from her home stood a Quranic school where around 100 children used to.
That night, as the flood waters swept through the town with frightening speed, the building housing the children caved in.
She heard the heartbreaking cries of the horrified kids but couldn’t help as the torrents were demonic. The cries soon d!ed down as the flood went away with them all in the house.
The d3ath toll so far is over 200 and counting.
Recounting the last moments of the pupils, Sulaiman said: “It was a painful sight for me. The children cried for help, but no one could do anything. As their cries got louder, their building sank and flowed away.”
