Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has donated the sum of ₦1 billion to victims d3adly attacks by gunmen in Yelwata community of Guma Local Government Area of Benue State.
It is alleged that no less than 100 people were k!lled and many others injured in the night of June 13 and early hours of June 14, 2025 in the rural Yelwata community.
The First Lady is reported by Daily Trust to have made the donation during a condolence visit to the state on Tuesday, an event that held at the New Banquet Hall of the Government House, Makurdi.
Mrs Tinubu pledged support from the Renewed Hope Initiative to address cross-border attacks and ensure affected children return to school.
She promised to work with the wife of the Nasarawa State Governor to find solutions to the recurring cross-border crisis.
The president’s wife later presented the ₦1 billion cheque to Governor Hyacinth Alia and state officials in a brief handover ceremony before meeting with stakeholders.
The First Lady was earlier received at the Tactical Air Command, Nigerian Air Force Base, Makurdi, around 10:45 am by the Governor and other top government officials.
Speaking at the event, the paramount ruler of Tiv nation worldwide, Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse, decried the continued attacks on Benue communities, describing them as a “genocidal war.”
The traditional ruler also accused neighbours, Nasarawa State, of serving as a base for the assailants and called for urgent action.
Speaking at the event, Benue State Governor bemoaned the humanitarian crisis caused by the attacks.
He called for the establishment of state police to allow for quicker response to security threats, urging the federal government to adopt ranching as a national policy to curb farmer-herder conflicts.
