The co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates and wife Melinda French Gates are now officially divorced after 27 years of marriage.
The news is contained in a case filed in King County Superior Court in Washington DC on Monday. The case formalised the couple’s decision three months after they announced their agreement to dissolve their union.
Bill and Melinda Gates were among the most prominent and steady couples in the business world, having worked together before their marriage.
They travelled together and participated in joint media interviews. Melinda French Gates had become uncomfortable with her husband’s relationship with billionaire investor, Jeffery Epstein and after media broke details the pair’s connection, Melinda engaged the services of divorce attorneys according to May editions of New York Times.
Monday’s filings says that neither spouse requested a name change, however, that doesn’t provide a clear image of everything that will change. A separation contract has also not been filed with the court.
In as much as they both have agreed to continue working together on philanthropy, it is possible the collaboration will end with a wedding as well.
Last month, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in which they are both co-chairs and trustees, said Melinda French Gates would step down if, after two years, either of them found that could not work together.
Bill Gates started Microsoft with Paul Allen in 1975 and Gates was the CEO.Melinda worked at Microsoft from 1987 to 1996.
They both met in 1987 and got married 1994 while their foundation was started in 2000.
In 2019, Microsoft received a report that Bill Gates attempted to establish an intimate relationship with an employee in 2000.
CNBC reports that a committee of the board conducted an investigation with the help of law-firm according a Microsoft spokesperson.
Bill stepped down from Microsoft in early 2020 but a spokesperson told New York Times that his action was not related to the case.
Bloomberg reports that Bill Gates is currently the 4th richest man in the world with a net worth of $152 billion.
Since they announced their separation, documents reveal that Bill Gates’ holding company, Cascade Investment, transferred shares of Autonation Inc and Deere to Melinda French Gates.
She was reportedly seen with Mackenzie Scott, former wife of Jeff Bezos at a agenda-related philanthropy.
