Former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has revealed how he married his first wife, Hajia Titi Atiku Abubakar, against the wishes of their parents over 50 years ago even as he affirmed that he couldn’t have married a better person.
Atiku spoke on Saturday during the 75th birthday anniversary of Hajia Titi Atiku Abubakar in Abuja, which was attended by friends and political allies.

The highlight of the occasion was a tender kiss shared with her husband, former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar, which melted hearts and stole the spotlight. Married for over 50 years, the couple’s affectionate moment underscored their remarkable bond, defying time and challenges.
The celebration, marked with joy and nostalgia, reflected on their unconventional love story. Atiku shared how they wed in 1971 against their families’ wishes, with only two friends as witnesses, highlighting their daring commitment. “Titi has been a blessing beyond measure,” Atiku said, praising her patience and strength. The couple, parents to four children—Fatima, Adamu, Halima, and Aminu—has built a legacy of love and resilience. Best gifts for your loved ones.
Titi, a renowned advocate for women and children’s rights, used the occasion to inspire. Founder of the Women Trafficking and Child Labour Eradication Foundation (WOTCLEF), she has championed social causes for decades, including initiating the bill for Nigeria’s National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). Her passion and dedication continue to impact lives, earning her accolades like the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).
Atiku’s heartfelt tribute emphasized patience as a cornerstone of their marriage, encouraging spouses to embrace it. The event, filled with dignitaries and well-wishers, celebrated not just Titi’s milestone but a love that remains vibrant. As Atiku noted, “I couldn’t have married a better wife,” their kiss symbolized a timeless truth: love, when nurtured, never gets old.
Taking to his Facebook page, Atiku said his wife Titi has been patient with him, and has been a blessing beyond measure to him and their family, calling on other spouses to continue to be patient with each other.
“On the occasion of my beloved wife Titi’s 75th birthday anniversary celebrations, I am proud to say that I couldn’t have married a better wife. Titi and I got married against our parents’ wishes in the most daring way, with no family members, with only two friends.
“Today, we have been married for more than 50 years. Titi has been a blessing beyond measure to me and our family. I don’t know how we started calling ourselves Mummy and Daddy. I thank her for being patient with my shortcomings.
“Patience is a virtue you can never regret. I encourage spouses to continue to be patient with each other. I wish Titi many more years of bliss and blessings,” Atiku stated.
